Laminate Floors
Laminate refers to a type of flooring that floats over an existing floor. Laminates can be installed over most existing flooring such as ceramic, vinyl and hardwood. Laminates should not be installed over carpet & carpet padding. It is generally constructed of a high density pressed board with a backing & a printed design covered with a protective wear layer. Laminates were designed to give consumers a durable alternative to your typical vinyl floor covering choices. Laminates are available in a wide variety of styles, colors, patterns and textures; some resemble hardwood floors while others resemble ceramic tiles.
back layer - the back is reinforced with melamine for structural stability and moisture resistance.
fiberboard core - core board provides impact resistance and stability.
decorative layer - the decorative layer is actually a highly detailed photograph that gives the laminate the appearance of wood or tile.
wear layer - the melamine wear layer is a tough, clear finish reinforced with aluminum oxide (one of the hardest mineral compounds known to man - also used to finish hardwood floors & even some vinyls) to resist staining, fading, surface moisture, and wear.
Laminates are installed over a thin vapor barrier & a pad.
