Common tile terms
Below
you will find commonly used tile terms:
Ceramic
Tile : Ceramic tile is a natural product made up of clay,
minerals and water. Ceramic tile comes in two forms – glazed and unglazed.
Glazed Tile : Glazed ceramic tile
is a popular choice for your interior floors and walls. The glazed tiles have a
special ceramic coating that is applied to the body of the tile which gives the
tile its color and finish. These tiles are normally less expensive and more
readily sampled.
Unglazed Tile : There is no
glazing or any other coating applied to the tile. The color is the same on the
face of the tile as it is on the back resulting in very durable tiles that do
not show the effects of heavy traffic. The most common unglazed tiles are the
red quarry tiles or the granite looking porcelain ceramic tiles used in heavy
commercial areas.
Porcelain Tile : They are denser
and less porous than ceramic tile and highly resistant to moisture, stains,
bacteria, odors and even harsh cleaners. For homeowners, porcelain tile is
especially resistant to staining, scratches, fading and is available in both
polished and matte finishes. Porcelain tiles also come in a wide variety of
sizes, colors and textures. They are available in through-body or glazed forms.
Through-body porcelain tiles :
have the same colors all the way through so if they get chipped or scratched the
color will not change.
Glazed porcelain tiles : They
have a design layer (glaze) on top of the tile body that is a different color
and will be noticeable if chipped.
Natural Stone Tiles : The term
natural stone tiles generally refers to a 12" x 12" x 1/2" tile cut from a solid
stone of either a marble, granite, or limestone. Because these tiles are cut
from solid stone quarries, no 2 pieces will ever be exactly the same. This
characteristic makes natural stone tiles a truly unique choice.
Mortar : refers to the cement
based adhesives used to attach your tile to the sub-floor.
Mastic : refers to the adhesive
used to attach your tile to any vertical surface.
Grout : refers to the colored
product between the tiles. Comes in both Sanded and Unsanded types
in a wide array of color choices. Most grouts are Latex Modified to help
resist stains & mildew. Also available in an Epoxy form, most commonly
used in commercial installations.
Modular : refers to tile that is
calibrated to use in patterns.
